CHAPTER SIX

Since everyone else is distracted and Evan will likely sleep for a while thanks to the antihistamines, I take the opportunity to make my escape upstairs. A bit of quiet time will do me good.

Soft voices inside Hadley’s room make me unsure whether to pause or hurry by. As I approach her door, I realize the voices are coming from a movie rather than real people. I pause in the doorway and peek inside. Hadley is sitting up in bed with a laptop balanced on her lap. A thick blanket covers her legs and an open box of Candy Cane Viva Puffs sits beside her.

“Hey,” she says, pausing her movie. “I don’t suppose you came up here to hide out too?”

“As a matter of fact, I did.” I take a small step into the room and she waves me forward, moving the cookies aside and patting the space beside her. It’s a tight fit since it’s a single bed, but I’m not about to turn her down when we’ve hardly had a chance to hang out the last couple of days. As soon as I’m sitting, she rearranges the blanket so it covers us both. The movie on the laptop is paused with Kate Winslet on the screen. “The Holiday! This is one of my favorite movies.”

“Same here. I finished a Hallmark movie and started this one because I wanted something familiar and comforting. I can go back to the beginning if you want.”

I study the screen; it’s the part where Kate’s character has just arrived in Los Angeles. “That’s okay. For me, the movie really starts getting good when Cameron Diaz’s character is debating leaving and Jude Law’s character shows up, and that’s next.” She moves to unpause it, but I stop her. “Where’s Tucker? I haven’t seen him since dinner.”

“He went to check out that saloon Evan mentioned,” she says, avoiding my gaze. “I think a second afternoon of family games was too much for him and he needed a break.” She points to the other bed, still not quite meeting my eyes. “Hey, do you want to shove the beds together? We’d probably be more comfortable not so squished into this one bed.”

Each of us pushes a bed from one side until they meet in the middle, and then we make ourselves a comfy little nest of pillows and blankets. Even with twice as much room, we still end up sitting close together, the same blanket as before over our legs, and the laptop balanced on a pile of pillows in front of us.

Hadley hits play on the movie and puts the box of Viva Puffs between us to share. We watch in silence until the part where Arthur explains to Iris what a ‘meet cute’ is, and Hadley pauses the movie again.

“Will you tell me about yours and Evan’s meet cute? He’s told me bits and pieces, but I’d like to hear it from you.”

“Of course.” For some reason, I’m ridiculously touched by her request.
